Firefighter

Does all the hard work! In Ireland firefighters are trained in a variety of roles from firefighting to rescue to chemical incidents, road traffic collisions and ventilation etc.

Leading Firefighter

In some brigades primarily retained ones the leading firefighter is also a driver mechanic responsible for minor maintenance on the appliance.

Sub Officer

The first level of junior officer who is responsible for one fire crew and in charge of that appliance. Also carries out training of crews and assist the Station Officer in the running of the station.

Station Officer

In charge of a fire appliance and a station which may or may not have one or more sub officers attached to it. Responsible for the running of the station and the training of crews.

District Officer

Only in Dublin the District Officer is in charge of a number of fire stations and is responsible for district training requirements.  He responds to a fire in a separate car which has a number of extra communication facilities.

Third Officer

Middle management and mostly in Dublin Fire Brigade. In charge of a specific area of administration such as logistics or fire training. Will respond to fires of 5 pumps or more and calls for a fatality in a fire.

Assistant Chief Fire Officer

Senior Fire Officer in every brigade who is responsible for a large number of brigade areas. Will respond to very large fires and fills in for the Chief Fire Officer when absent.

Chief Fire Officer

In charge of the whole brigade for each fire authority. There are 30 Fire Authorities in the Republic of Ireland with one Chief Fire Officer in Northern Ireland.
